Fiscal Year End Wraps up for 2020-2021 –
What a Year It Was for Rebound
March 31st marked the fiscal year end at Rebound, marking a full year of operation in the most remarkable year in its 24-year history. This time is always an opportunity for reflection and celebration at Rebound. This year’s numbers tell a compelling story about our ability to pivot and provide much-needed service during uncertain times – but they also point to the continuing and increased needs across this County for the full breadth of Rebound’s programs and services.
Here are some of last year’s highlights:
Rebound staff conducted 1,319 one-to-one virtual counselling support sessions for children and youth.
Rebound volunteer tutors offered 405 virtual tutoring/education sessions, including virtual guitar lessons.
Rebound developed three new streams of emotion self-regulation group programming this past year, with 35 clients participating virtually in these 8-week programs.
Rebound facilitated 25 Triple P virtual education seminars to parents and caregivers across Northumberland, focusing on supporting children struggling with issues such as anxiety and/or aggression at various developmental stages.
Strategic Planning in Full Effect at Rebound –
We Want to Hear from You!
Rebound Child & Youth Services is excited to announce that, with the support of our stakeholders, we’re embarking on a strategic planning journey.
Our Board of Directors came together in early April to take the first step and begin this important work. As we think about what the future holds for Rebound, we know how important it is to listen to the voices of our stakeholders.
We’ve designed a process that invites clients, family members, volunteers, staff, community partners, donors, and funders to share their input and tell us what matters most. Throughout the month of May, we’ll be hosting focus groups, key informant interviews, and sharing an online survey to gather thoughts and ideas, shed light on important issues and uncover the most promising opportunities for Rebound. Through this process, we will explore perceptions about how the organization is doing, opportunities and gaps, and how Rebound Child & Youth Services can better meet the needs of children, youth, and families of Northumberland.
We’re committed to establishing a strategic plan that is informed by experience, evidence, and the broadest-held perceptions of the individuals who interact with the organization on a daily basis. We hope that you will consider joining us as we pause, reflect, and shape the growth and direction of Rebound Child & Youth Services in the years ahead.
We look forward to reporting back and sharing our new strategic directions with you in the coming months!
The Rural Outreach Clinic in Colborne is Officially a Reality
Residents of Cramahe Township now have the option of staying local in order to have basic medical needs met, thanks to the completion of Northumberland’s first-ever Rural Outreach Clinic in Colborne this spring. The project, made possible through a collaboration of the Ontario Health Team of Northumberland and the township, features services including mental health counselling for adults and youth, primary care for those currently without a primary care physician and seniors’ wellness supports.
The clinic, located at 34 Victoria Street in Colborne is supported by counsellors from Rebound Child & Youth Services, who will offer youth mental health supportive services on alternating Fridays. Call 289-265-0505 to book an appointment during these times.
We are thrilled to be part of this partnership.
Brand New Group Programming Has Exploded (Virtually) at Rebound This Spring
"My son loved the group! One of the first comments he made after the first meeting was that he was happy to have met people that are like him, who he can help and who can help him.” – Parent of a child in the winter Emotional Regulation Group
After successfully implementing new virtual group programming this past fall and winter, Rebound’s staff are again facilitating new programming at full capacity this spring.
Demand for Rebound’s core learning and life skills program, CHOICES remains consistent and continues to be offered virtually to classrooms across Northumberland County. However, demand for more specific programming, focused on struggles with anxiety, emotional regulation and low mood, prompted the creation of a new series of group programming, developed in partnership with Cunning Consulting.
Early response from this programming has been overwhelmingly positive. The spring program will wrap up in June, with more programs coming in the fall.
Art it Out, Rebound’s First-Ever Expressive Arts Program Launched
In addition to the targeted prevention group programming already underway, Rebound has just launched a brand-new expressive arts virtual group program. Entitled Art it Out!, this 8-week program caters both to youth with strong artistic abilities and those who simply enjoy the stress-reducing benefits of art exploration.
The program, the first of its kind at Rebound, was created to address the growing evidence around the therapeutic value that art exploration provides young people. Each week, participants aged 9-14 are engaged in broad themes aimed at enhancing emotional awareness, relaxation and self-esteem.
Positive Parenting Programs This Spring
Demand for Triple P – Positive Parenting Program offerings has exploded in recent months. In response to the demand, Rebound has continued to partner with local agencies across Northumberland to develop and facilitate a full slate of program offerings this past winter and into the spring.
Spring virtual seminar options include The Power of Positive Parenting, Raising Confident, Competent Children, and Raising Resilient Children, offerings that continue to reflect the challenges that parents/caregivers and their children are faced with in these unique times. Seminars are a great way to connect with other parents and caregivers, ask questions to trained professionals, and be part of unique, supportive conversation about what matters most to parents and caregivers. As always, Triple P programming remains free of charge to all residents of Northumberland County. To register, visit Positive Parenting Northumberland’s website.
Spring Flower Arrangement Fundraiser Raises Nearly $800 for Rebound and Northumberland United Way
It’s no secret that aromatherapy is one of nature’s greatest stress reducers. This past April, Rebound partnered with The Local Bloom in Cobourg to offer up one of the sweetest smelling events of the spring, and brightened homes across Northumberland County. Over 50 flower enthusiasts were treated to a personalized kit of materials and a one-hour virtual flower arranging workshop and Q & A session, hosted by the owner of The Local Bloom, Meredith Edwards. Over half of the proceeds from the event were donated directly to Rebound and Northumberland United Way. We want to thank The Local Bloom for their generosity and support, particularly in these challenging times for local businesses.
Ride for Rebound is Ramping Up
Thanks to Cobourg Police Chief Paul VandeGraaf, Rebound is set to spin into one of its biggest fundraising campaigns yet.
On Saturday, May 29th (or potentially a date in June, to be determined as we await confirmation that the current stay-at-home order is extended), Cobourg Police Chief VandeGraaf will be joined by some of Northumberland’s biggest cycling enthusiasts for a 115 kilometer bike ride throughout Northumberland County to raise awareness for Rebound and youth mental health. As an avid supporter of Rebound, Chief VandeGraaf developed this initiative in partnership with Rebound to acknowledge and support the ongoing work Rebound does to help children and youth reach their fullest potential.
“As the Police Chief for the Cobourg Police Service, I have seen firsthand how early intervention through Rebound Child & Youth Services can change the course of a child’s life,” he says. “That’s why I am riding for Rebound.”
The ride aims to raise $20,000 to support Rebound’s programs and services, which have seen a sharp increase in demand in recent months. There are still spots available for those not of the faint of heart, however those wishing to support the initiative from the comfort of their own homes may do so by supporting a rider here.
Northumberland Charity Golf Tournament is Back!
Golf enthusiasts, pull those clubs out of storage and get back in the swing of things! After an absence last year, we are thrilled to announce that this year’s 9th annual Northumberland Charity Golf Tournament is back on, with the date tentatively set for June 19, 2021. This tournament, hosted by Ash Brook Golf Club and the Port Hope Knights of Columbus, will support Rebound Child & Youth Services and Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre. Those interested in participating can register today. Or if your company would like to sponsor a hole for either $100 or $300 please email Gavin at ghinton@rcys.ca.
Donor Spotlight: LiUNA! Local 183
In these uncertain times, fundraising can be a challenge. When Rebound set its ambitious fundraising goal of $65,760 back in April 2020, it would have been impossible to imagine the difficult year ahead. As Rebound’s fiscal year came to a close and it appeared we may finish shy of our target, LiUNA! Local 183 stepped in to generously help us to meet (and surpass!) our fundraising goal with a donation of over $5,500.
LiUNA! Local 183 is the largest construction local union in North America, representing over 58,000 construction workers in the GTA. Located in Cobourg, LiUNA! has a longstanding history of supporting local charities, and we are honoured that this year they have chosen to support Rebound.
We continue to be humbled by the generosity of Northumberland’s individuals and businesses, who recognize the important work we do in supporting this County’s children, youth, and families.
Staff Changes at Rebound
The Rebound team is growing, in more ways than one!
Please join us in wishing our Outreach & Fund Development Manager, Rachel Edwards, as well as our Program Manager, Julia Wood, a wonderful, family and adventure-filled year as they both are set to become new mothers. Rachel is already the mother of 20-month-old Adeline, while Julia will be blessed for the very first time. We’re so excited for our Rebound family to grow, because, in case you didn’t know, we love children and youth.
Krystyne Gillespie and Jennifer Hibbert will take on expanded interim supervisory roles in Rachel and Julia’s absence.
We’re excited to announce that Gavin Hinton will be taking on an expanded role in communications and fund development for the next year while Rachel is on maternity leave. Gavin’s expertise with technology and social media will enable Rebound to be seen and heard better than ever before.
In addition, we couldn’t be happier to welcome back Malorie Hudson, who has worked with us in the past as part of our mental health team, and who has since successfully set to complete her Master of Counselling Psychology. Congratulations Malorie, and welcome back to our team. We have missed you!
For the past 8 months we have been fortunate to have had Ashley Larrimore join our team as a placement student, as she worked to complete her requirements for her Masters in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University. Now that her placement has come to a close, we are privileged to officially welcome Ashley to our growing team of Child & Youth Counsellors. Among her many responsibilities will be the Youth Mental Health Walk-in, which Rebound offers in partnership with Northumberland Hills Hospital. Welcome to our team, Ashley! Rebound and Northumberland’s youth are lucky to have you.
